Date Night – Make a Canister

What could be more fun than working with your partner to create a beautiful and functional canister? Use it as a wine cooler, or use it to store your kitchen tools. It will be plenty big for either function.

You will work together to create the large cylinder shape which is hand built. You will then decide how you are going to decorate the outside of the cylinder. A  grape theme is shown, but many options exist. You could do flowers, sea shells, shapes, leaves (weather dependent), or any number of ideas.

The seconds class, the following week, you will glaze your canister. Depending on how much detail you add, it should take the full two hours to create your canister.

The class will take place Saturday evening, from 4 – 6 pm, October 23 and 30.

Make the canister and then enjoy dinner at one of Groton’s many nice restaurants, most located within walking distance of our studio.

Your canister will be ready to take home within 2 weeks from your last class.

The price is for 2 people.

Make a Menorah – Tuesday

We will be making a menorah.  This is a two day workshop, though, it may take more than 2 days, depending on how much detail you want to add. You will be given a long cylinder of clay, over a foot long, on which you will build your menorah. You can create any theme you want. Since Hanukkah is early this year, I went with a fall theme on the menorah I made. The first day we will make the menorah, and you will add your detail. You can turn your cylinder into a box, like I did, or just leave it as a cylinder. You can add texture or a stamped design, or flowers, whatever you want, and I will help in the technical aspect … I will be making more

over the coming weeks, but I have one completed to stir your creativity. Also, take a look at the link below for other ideas of ceramic menorahs made across the internet. The second day, a week later, we will glaze the menorah you made the previous week. This class is limited to 8 people. It will take place Tuesday

November 2 and 9 from 7 – 9 pm.

If you need more time to complete your menorah, we will find the time to complete at no extra charge. It is more important to have something that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

More examples to follow.

Made from a slab of clay, molded over a form, and finished on the wheel, you will be led through the steps to make a bowl. The bowl will be big enough for a small serving bowl, or an extra large serving of ice cream for one. We will cover different ways of adding texture and making a foot which can either be low or tall like a pedestal as shown. No experience needed. The class will meet October 4 and 11 from 4 – 6 pm. The first class we will focus on making the bowl, it will likely take the full two hours depending on how much detail you add. During the second class we will glaze the bowl. Make a Spaghetti Plate – October

During this 2 day workshop you will be led through the steps to make your very own plate.  The first day, which will take about 2 hours, we will make the plate, and cover different ways to decorate it. The plate is made from a slab of clay, molded, and then finished on the wheel. Once the plate is made, you can finish it any way you want. A number of different methods of decorating  will be covered, including use of texture, use of underglazes and stencils, and sgraffito, a popular Italian method of decorating pottery (as shown on the plate pictured).  The focus will be on using the sgraffito method, but you can finish it as you like, but the class focus will be on creating a  concentric sgraffito design of black, white, and a minimal amount of red as accent. The second scheduled day, we will finish the plate. Depending on how much is done the first class, the second class could take an hour to 2 hours. Your plate will be ready for you to take home within 2 weeks of you finishing it.

The workshop will take place October 19 and 26 from 7 to 9 pm.

No experience necessary!

The class is limited to 4 people. Grab a friend and make an evening of it. We will be sharing 1 wheel among 4 people, so we will have to take turns to finish the plate. I hope the 4 wheels I ordered in April will be in, in which case I will expand attendance to 8 people, but I am doubtful.

I have been teaching pottery and ceramics in a variety of situations, for all age groups, for more than 30 years. I absolutely love teaching and sharing my love of clay with others.

Make a Spoon Rest (September)

There is so much that is good about learning to make pottery! To take a lump of clay and transform it into something beautiful – that is also functional, is so incredibly satisfying. A spoon rest is one of those things that is functional, but also has so much versatility in terms of design. (Also, they make great presents!)  There is no end to how creative you can get with your design.

Working from a template and mold, you will make three spoon rests that reflect your own own style! One spoon rest will be similar to the one shown using a magnolia leaf (or bring your own leaf from home), another will be the more traditional spoon  rest, the third allows you to tap into your own creativity and create your own design.

The first day of this two day workshop will be spent making the actual spoon rests. Depending on how much detail you include, or how much you branch out on your own design, it will take a little over an hour. The second class will also take around an hour for glazing.

The class is limited to 8 people, and will take place on Monday evening, 7 – 9 pm, September 20 and 27.  For examples of other spoonrests folks across the internet have made: click here

Make a Mirror

Functional beauty that lets your creativity shine. That is what working with clay is all about. Making a mirror frame is one of the easiest ways to learn about clay and there are so many different styles that are easy and will make your friends think you have been working with clay for decades. You can add clay to make a design, carve a design, use stamps, or use different available textures. Your finished mirror frame will be about 10 by 7 inches. The first class will be spent making the frame, the second class will be spent glazing, and the last class will be spent adding gluing the glass in and adding a backing, and wire or string for hanging.  The glass we will be using is mirror glass from mirrors  that have been upcycled glass. The first class will be nd the last class will be September 29.  The workshop will meet from 7 to 9 pm on these days. It will be limited to 8 students.
