SUMMARY:Learn to Throw - July/August
DESCRIPTION:Learn to throw on a potter’s wheel. Group lessons limited to 4 students. This class is specifically for adults.  Price is for 8 two hour classes and includes materials. The class will cover centering\, throwing techniques\, trimming and glazing . Techniques to decorate a pot\, including adding clay\, carving\, sgraffito\, and use of underglazes and washes will be covered. \nThis is primarily focusing on beginner techniques. Click here for a course outline   8 week class outline.   If you have never worked with clay before\, I would highly suggest  taking the 4 week Intro to Ceramics class\, first – or even the “One Day Intro to Throwing Class.”  If you have taken this class before\, I have suggested a modified version of this class for you. Sign up for this class\, and we can work on the projects detailed in this post. This Adult class will take place Thursday mornings starting July 9\, 16\, 23\, 30 and  August 6\, 13\, 20\, and 28  from 9:30 – 11:30 am.  \nNo refunds allowed\, unless I am able to fill your seat prior to class starting. Throwing on the wheel requires a certain amount of strength\, it also requires that your hands will get dirty. You will also need to cut your nails short. If you are not sure you have the strength to do it\, or will appreciate the wonderful tactile nature of the art\, I would suggest an intro to throwing class first.  \n  It will run 8 weeks. If you miss a class\, you can sign up for an open studio\, at your cost.  \nThis is a good class for folks who have taken an Intro to Ceramics and are looking for a more structured class setting to improve throwing skills.  \nTo sign up for this class\, click here.\nPlease be sure to familiarize yourself with the studio rules prior to signing up.

SUMMARY:Raku Open Studio - July 10
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for folks who have familiarity with clay\, and want to try something new. There are no prerequisites\, though. Last summer we had so much fun with raku. Our hope is to do that again this summer.  \nYou have seen the fun on “The Great Pottery Throwdown”. Now you can try it yourself! A fun way to end the work week. There are no prerequisites to attend this workshop. \nThis will be run the same as the regular open studio – with a couple of differences: \n\nclay limited to 3 pounds. Given the small size of the actual raku kiln\, items made will be limited in size. Please try to keep your pieces no bigger than 6″ x 6″. No more than 3 pieces. \nwheels are not guaranteed – I have found \, though\, that potters are very good about sharing resources. If you choose to make something on the wheel\, you need to plan to come back to another open studio to trim it. \nthere are no prerequisites\, but you should have experience working with clay. \nAt least 4 people need to sign up for the class to take place. \nif you are a regular open studio attendee\, you will not be able to work with your raku piece during regular open studio times. Raku clay has a different firing temperature and it is important that the regular studio clay does not mix with the raku clay. The studio is also too small to pull out raku materials during regular open studio. \n\nThis workshop is for Friday\, July 10\,  from 3 – 5  pm. \n\n\nThe next raku firings will tentatively take place Friday evening July 24 from 5 – 8  pm – dependent on: \n\nAre there enough pieces to fill the kiln?\nIs the weather suitable? ( no rain in the forecast\, not too hot\, not too cold\, not too windy)\nAre there enough folks to help with the firing? At least 6 are needed\n\nThe rain date will be the following Friday at the same time. \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here.\nPlease familiarize yourself with the studio rules before committing to this class.\n \n

SUMMARY:Make a Raku Mask
DESCRIPTION:Raku mask by Deborah Buterbaugh\, “Ocean Spirit”\nThis workshop will take place July 17 from 3 -5 pm. During this workshop\, we will make a mask using raku clay. I have not had a chance to make a prototype\, but have included other raku masks made by artists found on the internet. If you are not famililiar with raku firing\, please see video below.  \nYou have seen the fun on “The Great Pottery Throwdown”. Now you can try it yourself! \nA fun way to end the work week. There are no prerequisites to attend this workshop. \nLorena GONZALEZ MONSALVE\n\nYou will be provided a slab of clay and a template\, from which you will create  your mask. The studio is also too small to pull\nLinda Kloss\nout raku materials during regular open studio. \n\n  \nTo make your mask\, you will be given a slab of clay about 8 x 11 inches. You will also be given a cardboard mask mold\, often used to glue on decorations. That form can be used as the base for your mask\, or you can create your own face. The extra clay that does not form the mask itself\, can be used to add applique. You can only make the mask and attached decorations. Individual danging bits are just too hard to keep track of.  \nYou will glaze your piece prior to whatever date you choose to fire your piece. The next raku firing will take place July 24 from 5 – 8 pm.  The rain date will be the following week.  \n\n\nThis workshop is for Friday July 17 from 3 – 5  pm.  To sign up for this workshop\, click here\n\n\nThe next raku firings will tentatively take place Friday evening July 24 from 5 – 8  pm – dependent on: \n\nAre there enough pieces to fill the kiln?\nIs the weather suitable? SUMMARY:Raku Firing - 7/24
DESCRIPTION:This is for folks to sign up to fire any raku pots\, or fish\,  they have made in my workshops – or help. In order for the raku firing to take place\, I need at least 6 people. If you have not made a pot\, and just want to help\, your help is welcome! No experience necessary. For those who have made something – please feel free to bring them along\, friends or family with no experience\,  if they can help.  \nTasks as a part of the raku firing: \n\nRemoval of red hot pot (or fish) from kiln with tongs to place in garbage can filled with combustible materials\nSomeone to fan the flames and then put the top on the garbage can once the pot (or fish) is placed inside\n\nThis firing will take place July 24  (Friday) from 5 – 8 pm. If you can get to the studio early\,  after 4 pm to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  Bring a camp chair.   \nThe firing will be cancelled/postponed in the event of rain\, extreme heat/cold\, or fewer than 6 people.  \nPlease do not wear open toe shoes\, or loose fitting clothes\, and it is a good idea to tie your hair back.\nOnce your pot is cool enough to take out of the garbage can\, it is placed into water to thoroughly cool. Once cool\, you will scrub it clean\, hopefully removing the carbon and exposing the cool glazes underneath. You then dry it\, and coat it with floor wax to slow down the continued oxidation of the pot and protect the iridescence of the piece. If it has an unglazed part\, you can add some black acrylic paint to highlight the contrast between the unglazed and glazed.  \nWe will try to fire the piece you made during the time that you help – this is subject to room in the kiln. If you make more than one item\, every effort will be made to make sure at least one item gets into the kiln. I do not anticipate that at least one of your items does not make it into the kiln. Other items will be fired when there is room in the kiln.  \nRaku pottery is\, for the most part\, decorative and not intended to be used functionally. \nThis is for July 24 from 5 – 8  pm Come at 4 pm if you need to glaze. Raindate will be July 31\, same time
