SUMMARY:Learn to Throw - Sept/Oct
DESCRIPTION:Learn to throw on a potter’s wheel. Group lessons limited to 4 students. This class is specifically for adults.  Price is for 8 two hour classes and includes materials. The class will cover centering\, throwing techniques\, trimming and glazing . Techniques to decorate a pot\, including adding clay\, carving\, sgraffito\, and use of underglazes and washes will be covered. \nThis is primarily focusing on beginner techniques. Click here for a course outline   8 week class outline.   If you have never worked with clay before\, I would highly suggest  taking the 4 week Intro to Ceramics class\, first – or even the “One Day Intro to Throwing Class.“  If you have taken this class before\, I have suggested a modified version of this class for you. Sign up for this class\, and we can work on the projects detailed in this post. This Adult class will take place Wednesday evenings starting September 3\, 10\, 17 and 24 \, and October 1\,8\,15\, and 22  from 6 – 8 pm.  \nNo refunds allowed\, unless I am able to fill your seat prior to class starting. Throwing on the wheel requires a certain amount of strength\, it also requires that your hands will get dirty. You will also need to cut your nails short. If you are not sure you have the strength to do it\, or will appreciate the wonderful tactile nature of the art\, I would suggest an intro to throwing class first.  \n  It will run 8 weeks. If you miss a class\, you can sign up for an open studio\, at your cost.  \nThis is a good class for folks who have taken an Intro to Ceramics and are looking for a more structured class setting to improve throwing skills.  \nPlease be sure to familiarize yourself with the studio rules prior to signing up. \nTo sign up for this class\, click here

SUMMARY:Make a Spaghetti Bowl Using leaves or texture
DESCRIPTION:This is a beginner class – no experience needed!  All ages over 12 years welcome! (Younger children should be accompanied) Even if you are experienced\, though\, this will still be a great class! \nJoin us on September 5 and 12 from 6 – 8 pm to make a bowl\, decorated with leaves!  This bowl\, which is about 10 inches wide\, and is oven and dishwasher safe\, microwavable and food safe. It is deep\, making it a good spaghetti bowl. If you don’t want to use leaves\, you could use any of the 20 rolling pins of the studio to make a texture. Pictured below is the mushroom rolling pin.  \nDuring this 2 day workshop you will be led through the steps to make your very own bowl.  The first day\, which will take about 1 hour\,  we will make the bowl. The bowl is made from a slab of clay\, molded\, and then finished on the wheel. Once the bowl is made\, you can finish it any way you want. A number of different methods of decorating  will be covered\, including use of texture\, or using leaves.   The focus will be on using leaves\,  though you can finish it as you like. The second scheduled day\, you will glaze the bowl. Two different methods of glazing will be covered – the first you wipe back the glaze\, highlighting the “fossil” left by the  leaf\, the second\, you can paint each individual leaf. Depending on which method you choose\, the second class could take an hour to 2 hours. Your plate will be ready for you to take home within 3 weeks of you finishing it.  \n \nThe workshop will take place September 5 and 12 from 6 – 8 pm.  \nThe class is limited to 6 people.  \nPrevious student work: \n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\nI have been teaching pottery and ceramics in a variety of situations\, for all age groups\, for more than 40 years. SUMMARY:Drop In Sunday - Clock Face
DESCRIPTION:We will be making ceramic clock faces on Sunday\, September 7\,  from 2 – 4 pm.. This project will add a spark of joy to your wall as the years tick by.  \nWorking from a prepared slab of clay\, about 8 x 11 inches\, and templates\, you will be led through the steps to make this base of the clock. What decoration you use on the clock is up to you. Your slab of clay is a blank canvas waiting for your inspiration.  You can google ceramic clock faces to get some ideas. Pictures included are from different artists that I found on the internet. \nCome back two weeks later\, and glaze your clock. In this project\, white\, blue\, green and clear glazes will be available to you to finish your project.  A full palette of underglazes will also be available. \nTo finish your clock you will need to buy your own clock parts – easily obtained online. (Google hobby clock) .  \nYou can pick up your clock within 3 weeks from when you glaze it. \n It will probably take you about an hour to make one piece. A different project will be offered each week. Check here for future projects \nPayment may be made through this website or at the door with cash. Attending a drop in studio does not count towards the prerequisite requirements for attending open studio. \nTo sign up for this\, click here.\nCheck studio rules before committing to this workshop.

SUMMARY:Raku Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:You have seen the fun on “The Great Pottery Throwdown”. Now you can try it yourself! A fun way to start the work week. \nThis will be run the same as the regular open studio – with a couple of differences: \n\nclay limited to 3 pounds. Given the small size of the actual raku kiln\, items made will be limited in size. Please try to keep your pieces no bigger than 6″ x 6″. \nwheels are not guaranteed – I have found \, though\, that potters are very good about sharing resources. If you choose to make something on the wheel\, you can come back on Friday September 19 from 6 – 8 pm to trim. This will be your only opportunity to trim what you made. \nthere are no prerequisites\, but you should have experience working with clay. \nAt least 4 people need to sign up for the class to take place. \nif you are a regular open studio attendee\, you will not be able to work with your raku piece during regular open studio times. Raku clay has a different firing temperature and it is important that the regular studio clay does not mix with the raku clay. The studio is also too small to pull out raku materials during regular open studio. \n\nThis workshop is for Monday September 15  from 3:30 – 5:30 pm. \n\n\nThe next raku firing will take place Friday evening September 26th from 6 – 8 pm. Come at 5 if you need to glaze your piece. There is no charge for the firing\, but you need to sign up.  The firing  will depend on: \n\nAre there enough pieces to fill the kiln?\nIs the weather suitable? ( no rain in the forecast\, not too hot\, not too windy)\nAre there enough folks to help with the firing? At least 6 are needed\n\nPlease familiarize yourself with the studio rules before committing to this class.\n

SUMMARY:Intro to Throwing - September
DESCRIPTION:Have you wanted to learn to throw on the potter’s wheel\, but you are not sure you want to commit to a longer class? This is for you! This is a two day workshop\, one day you will play on the wheel\, and the next class\, the next week\,  you will come back and glaze your pot(s).  \nIn this workshop\, you will have unlimited amount of clay to try your hand on the wheel. From all the pots you make in this 2 hour class\, you can choose one to keep\, that you will glaze the following week. You can choose 4 of the pots you make for an additional charge of $4 per pot.  The first class will take 2 hours\, the second class will take about an hour (depending on how many pots you keep).  \nGrab your family or friends\, and make an evening of it! The throwing  class is limited to just 4 students\, providing you with some good one on one instruction. This is a good chance for you to see if you like working with clay before investing in a longer class.  \nPots made in previous “One Day Intro to Throwing” classes: \n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\nThis workshop will take place on Thursday \, September 18   from 4 – 6  pm.  \nPlease see my mask and studio rules.\nTo Sign Up for this Workshop – click here.

SUMMARY:Raku Fall Decorations - Pumpkin and Ghost
DESCRIPTION:The gold that can be created with the raku glazes lends itself perfectly for making a pumpkin to adorn your holiday table and the white crackle glaze for a ghost will add additonal fun to the table. \nYou will be provided a slab of clay\, enough to make both items and templates. You will be led through the steps to assmble the two pieces. Come back the following week to glaze and fire your pieces.  \nOnce your ghost and pumpkin are madei\, they will be bisque fired. This firing burns out the organic material from the clay\, and makes it sturdy enough to be glazed. Come back the following week to glaze and fire your pumpkin and ghost. \n  \nI am hoping to have 8 people per firing to help. You will sign up for a firing  on the Old School Clay website that works with your schedule. The day you sign up\, you will glaze your pumpkin and ghost.  Then we will do the firing. There will be no additional charge for the firing.  If it is too hot or rain is expected\, the firing may be cancelled or rescheduled or postponed. \nThese are a couple of good videos about raku – if you are not familiar with the process. \nWe will try to do the glaze firing September 26\, but this is subject to weather and temperature. I also need at least 6 folks to help with the firing. If you can’t make the September 26 date\, there will likely be another firing in October – but once it gets cold\, raku is done for the year. \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here\nPlease familiarize yourself with the rules of the studio before committing to this workshop.\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Drop In Sunday - Make a Ghost
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 21 from 2 – 4 pm\,  we will be making ceramic ghosts. Use it to decorate your holiday table\, or add it as a focal point for a seasonal bouquet. \nYou will be provided with a slab of clay\, and a paper stencil. You will then trace around the stencil on the clay\, and then fold the clay up to make the ghost shape. The trick to this project is getting the clay fold to look like a draping sheet with gentle folds.  Cut out a face and it can be used as a luminaire.  \nFolding the clay up to make the ghost shape is a little bit tricky\, so it may not be an appropriate activity for the very young\, but I will leave it to you to decide what your child can do or can’t do.  \nThe cost is $15.  \nCome back in 2  weeks to glaze your ghost.  \nYour ghost will be ready for pick up  within 3 weeks from glazing. This is the project for Sunday 10/6. The drop in workshop is offered from 2  – 4 pm.  It will probably take you about half an hour to make the ghost. You can come any time between those hours – just plan on half an hour to make the ghost. A different project will be offered every weekend. Projects for the fall include pumpkins\, pine tree luminaires\, pine tree stands and other holiday oriented projects. Once glazed and fired the pots will be dishwasher safe\, microwaveable and oven proof.  \nHere is the schedule (subject to change) of Drop In Sundays going forward. \nPlease familiarize yourself with studio rules\n

SUMMARY:Raku Firing - Sept 26
DESCRIPTION:This is for folks to sign up to fire any raku pots\, or fish\,  they have made in my workshops – or help. In order for the raku firing to take place\, I need at least 6 people. If you have not made a pot\, and just want to help\, your help is welcome! No experience necessary. For those who have made something – please feel free to bring them along\, friends or family with no experience\,  if they can help.  \nTasks as a part of the raku firing: \n\nRemoval of red hot pot (or fish) from kiln with tongs to place in garbage can filled with combustible materials\nSomeone to fan the flames and then put the top on the garbage can once the pot (or fish) is placed inside\n\nThis firing will take place Friday\, September 26\, from 6 -8 pm. If you can get to the studio early\,  after 5 pm to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  Bring a camp chair.   \nThe firing will be cancelled/postponed in the event of rain\, extreme heat\, or fewer than 6 people.  \nPlease do not wear open toe shoes\, or loose fitting clothes\, and it is a good idea to tie your hair back. \nOnce your pot is cool enough to take out of the garbage can\, it is placed into water to thoroughly cool. Once cool\, you will scrub it clean\, hopefully removing the carbon and exposing the cool glazes underneath. You then dry it\, and coat it with floor wax to slow down the continued oxidation of the pot and protect the iridescence of the piece. If it has an unglazed part\, you can add some black acrylic paint to highlight the contrast between the unglazed and glazed.  \nWe will try to fire the piece you made during the time that you help – this is subject to room in the kiln. If you make more than one item\, every effort will be made to make sure at least one item gets into the kiln. I do not anticipate that at least one of your items does not make it into the kiln. Other items will be fired when there is room in the kiln.  \nRaku pottery is\, for the most part\, decorative and not intended to be used functionally.  \nClick here to sign up: raku firing

SUMMARY:Sunday Drop In - Pumpkins!
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 25\, we will be making ceramic pumpkins. Use it to decorate your holiday table\, or add it as a focal point for a seasonal bouquet. \nYou will be provided with a slab of clay and a paper template. You will then trace around the stencil on the clay\, and then fold the clay up around a paper ball to make the pumpkin shape.  Add tendrils and leaves – you can use real leaves to get a beautiful vein imprint from the leaf.  \nFolding the clay up to make the pumpkin shape is a little bit tricky\, so it may not be an appropriate activity for the very young\, but I will leave it to you to decide what your child can do or can’t do.  \nThe cost is $15.  \nCome back  in 2 weeks to glaze your pumpkin.  \nYour pumpkin will be ready for pick up  within 3 weeks from glazing (usually a week to two). This is the project for Sunday 9/25. The drop in workshop is offered from 2  – 4 pm.  It will probably take you about an hour to make the pumpkin. You can come any time between those hours – just plan on at least a half an hour to make the pumpkin. A different project will be offered every weekend. Check here for future projects.  Once glazed and fired the pots will be dishwasher safe\, microwaveable and oven proof. \nTo pre-buy for this workshop\, click here \nPlease familiarize yourself with studio rules\n
