SUMMARY:Raku Firing - August 1
DESCRIPTION:This is for folks to sign up to fire any raku pots\, or fish\,  they have made in my workshops – or help. In order for the raku firing to take place\, I need at least 6 people. If you have not made a pot\, and just want to help\, your help is welcome! No experience necessary. For those who have made something – please feel free to bring them along\, friends or family with no experience\,  if they can help.  \nTasks as a part of the raku firing: \n\nRemoval of red hot pot (or fish) from kiln with tongs to place in garbage can filled with combustible materials\nSomeone to fan the flames and then put the top on the garbage can once the pot (or fish) is placed inside\n\nThis firing will take place Friday \, August 1\, from 6 – 8 pm. If you can get to the studio early to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  Rain date will be in August.  \nThe firing will be cancelled/postponed in the event of rain\, extreme heat\, or fewer than 6 people.  \nPlease do not wear open toe shoes\, or loose fitting clothes\, and it is a good idea to tie your hair back. \nOnce your pot is cool enough to take out of the garbage can\, it is placed into water to thoroughly cool. Once cool\, you will scrub it clean\, hopefully removing the carbon and exposing the cool glazes underneath. You then dry it\, and coat it with floor wax to slow down the continued oxidation of the pot and protect the iridescence of the piece. If it has an unglazed part\, you can add some black acrylic paint to highlight the contrast between the unglazed and glazed.  \nRaku pottery is\, for the most part\, decorative and not intended to be used functionally.  \nTo sign up – click here \n

SUMMARY:Raku Leaf Bowl
DESCRIPTION:You have seen the process on the Great Pottery Throwdown…now come do it yourself. Raku is the fun\, instant gratification (most times)\, playing with fire\, pottery process. The kiln reaches temperature fairly quickly\, and the pots are pulled out of the kiln red hot\, placed into a container of combustible materials\, which then ignites. Once the fire is really going\, a lid is put on the bin\, extinguishing the fire. What happens is that the glazes\, through the reduction of oxygen\, turn cool metallic colors. Clay that is not glazed turns black through the carbonization of the combustibles.  \nRaku leaf by artist Jill Egan\nThis workshop will take place Wednesday August 8 from  6 – 8   pm.  It is suitable for folks who have no experience working with clay of raku\, but given the nature of raku – not suitable for young children.  \nIn this workshop\, you will be a given a slab of clay\, into which you will press a larger leaf. That leaf is then shaped around a plaster mold\, or you can put a hole in it to hang for wind chimes. Once it is dry\, it is fired\, and made ready for you to come back and glaze it.   \nYou need to sign up for the actual raku firing that will take place Friday August 15 and/or Friday August 22\, There is no additonal cost for the firing\, but whether the firing take place will depend on the weather\, and if I have enough folks to help. If the temperature is over 90\, or if rain is forecasted\, or I don’t have enough people to help\, I need a minimum of 6\, the firing will be postponed.  \nSome of the results from recent raku firings at Old School Clay\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n\nMore leaves by Jill Egan\nThese are a couple of good videos about raku – if you are not familiar with the process. \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here.\nPlease familiarize yourself with the rules of the studio before committing to this workshop.\n \n \n

The metallics of the glazes are perfect to replicate the shininess of fish.  The fish that is the product image\, I made\, but I have included some other pictures for inspiration.   I would request that during this workshop – you will only make a fish. The collaboration and creative process of sharing ideas\, leads to all making a better product.  \nSome of the results from recent raku firings at Old School Clay\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\nOnce your fish is made\, it will be bisque fired. You will then come pick up your piece and hold it until the raku firing you sign up for happens.  \n \nDuring the summer\, I will be doing raku firings. I am hoping to have 8 people per firing to help. You will sign up for a firing  on the Old School Clay website that works with your schedule. The day you sign up\, you will bring your fish and glaze it. Then we will do the firing. There will be no additional charge for the firing.  If it is too hot or rain is expected\, the firing may be cancelled or rescheduled or postponed. \nThese are a couple of good videos about raku – if you are not familiar with the process.  \nWe will try to do the glaze firing August 15 and August 22\, 6 – 8 pm\, but this is subject to weather and temperature. If you can get to the studio early to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  I also have another firing scheduled for August 22 at the same time. Different ferns will be provided\, sensitive\, lady\, bracken\, and maybe royal\, or you can bring your own. This is a fun project for all ages. Depending on how much detail you add\, it could take half an hour to 2 hours. Come back 2 weeks later to glaze it. Use our nearly full pallette of underglaze  colors\, to highlight the “fossilized”  leaves\, and add clear glaze to finsih.   Once finished the plate is dishwasher safe\, microwavable and oven proof. \nUse it for any purpose for which a plate can be used.  \nThis is the project for August 17 from 2 – 4 pm.  Pay cash at the door or pay online.  \nPlease familiarize yourself with the studio rules before signing up. \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here

SUMMARY:Raku Firing - August 22
DESCRIPTION:This is for folks to sign up to fire any raku pots\, or fish\,  they have made in my workshops – or help. In order for the raku firing to take place\, I need at least 6 people. If you have not made a pot\, and just want to help\, your help is welcome! No experience necessary. For those who have made something – please feel free to bring them along\, friends or family with no experience\,  if they can help.  \nTasks as a part of the raku firing: \n\nRemoval of red hot pot (or fish) from kiln with tongs to place in garbage can filled with combustible materials\nSomeone to fan the flames and then put the top on the garbage can once the pot (or fish) is placed inside\n\nThis firing will take place Friday\, August 22\, from 6 -8 pm. If you can get to the studio early\,  after 5 pm to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  Bring a camp chair. \nWe will try to fire the piece you made during the time that you help – this is subject to room in the kiln. If you make more than one item\, every effort will be made to make sure at least one item gets into the kiln. I do nto anticipate that at least one of your items does nto make it into the kiln. Other items will be fired when there is room in the kiln.  \nRaku pottery is\, for the most part\, decorative and not intended to be used functionally. \nTo sign up to help with this firing\, click here

SUMMARY:Drop In Sunday - Leaf Bowl
DESCRIPTION:Using a prepared slab of clay\, and a large leaf (likely a catalpa\, grape\, hosta or norfolk maple)\, you will be led through the steps to make a bowl. The bowl will be big enough for trinkets\, nuts\, or keys. or whatever you think of!  \n \nPictured are bowls made by other artists typical of what you could make. I used to make these bowls when I taught camp\, and they always turned out great. Any age can be successful with project. \nCome back in two weeks to glaze your pot. A full pallete of underglazes are available or choose from green\, blue or white\, glazes.  \nThis is the project for Sunday August 24. The drop in workshop is offered from 2 – 4 pm.  It will probably take you about half an hour to make the bowl. You can come any time between those hours – just plan on half an hour to make the bowl. A different project will be offered every weekend. Projects for the fall include pumpkins\, pine tree luminaires\, and pine tree stands. Once glazed and fired the pots will be dishwasher safe\, microwaveable and oven proof.   \nSchedule for future projects here. \nPayment may be made through this website or at the door with cash \nTo sign up ahead of time for this drop in workshop\, click here.\nPlease review my studio rules.
