SUMMARY:Raku Firing - July 1
DESCRIPTION:This is for folks to sign up to fire any raku pots\, or fish\,  they have made in my workshops – or help. In order for the raku firing to take place\, I need at least 6 people. If you have not made a pot\, and just want to help\, your help is welcome! No experience necessary. For those who have made something – please feel free to bring them along\, friends or family with no experience\,  if they can help.  \nTasks as a part of the raku firing: \n\nRemoval of red hot pot (or fish) from kiln with tongs to place in garbage can filled with combustible materials\nSomeone to fan the flames and then put the top on the garbage can once the pot (or fish) is placed inside\n\nThis firing will take place Tuesday\, July 1\, from 6 – 8 pm. If you can get to the studio early to glaze your pot (fish)\, that would be great. I would like to do 2 firings. Each firing takes about an hour.  Rain date will be July 5.  \nThe firing will be cancelled/postponed in the event of rain\, extreme heat\, or fewer than 6 people.  \nPlease do not wear open toe shoes\, or loose fitting clothes\, and it is a good idea to tie your hair back. \nOnce your pot is cool enough to take out of the garbage can\, it is placed into water to thoroughly cool. Once cool\, you will scrub it clean\, hopefully removing the carbon and exposing the cool glazes underneath. You then dry it\, and coat it with floor wax to slow down the continued oxidation of the pot and protect the iridescence of the piece. If it has an unglazed part\, you can add some black acrylic paint to highlight the contrast between the unglazed and glazed.  \nRaku pottery is\, for the most part\, decorative and not intended to be used functionally.  \nTo sign up for the firing: click here

SUMMARY:Drop In Sunday - Fern Imprint Plate
DESCRIPTION:Using a rectangular plate – about 6 x 8 inches\, you will be led through the steps to make a plate with a leaf or fern imrint. Different ferns will be provided\, sensitive\, lady\, bracken\, and maybe royal\, or you can bring your own. This is a fun project for all ages. Depending on how much detail you add\, it could take half an hour to 2 hours. Come back 2 weeks later to glaze it. Use our nearly full pallette of underglaze  colors\, to highlight the “fossilized”  leaves\, and add clear glaze to finsih.   Once finished the plate is dishwasher safe\, microwavable and oven proof. \nUse it for any purpose for which a plate can be used.  \nThis is the project for July 6 from 2 – 4 pm.  Pay cash at the door or pay online.  \nPlease familiarize yourself with the studio rules before signing up. \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here

SUMMARY:Decorative Raku Fish
DESCRIPTION:You have seen the process on the Great Pottery Throwdown…now come do it yourself. Raku is the fun\, instant gratification (most times)\, playing with fire\, pottery process. The kiln reaches temperature fairly quickly\, and the pots are pulled out of the kiln red hot\, placed into a container of combustible materials\, which then ignites. Once the fire is really going\, a lid is put on the bin\, extinguishing the fire. What happens is that the glazes\, \n  \nthrough the reduction of oxygen\, turn cool metallic colors. Clay that is not glazed turns black through the carbonization of the combustibles.  \nThis workshop will take place Thursday July 10 from  4 – 6  pm.  It is suitable for folks who have no experience working with clay of raku\, but given the nature of raku – not suitable for children.  \nFish by Alicia\nIn this workshop\, you will be a given a slab of clay\, during which you will be led through the steps of creating a fish that you can hang on your wall. The metallics of the glazes are perfect to replicate the shininess of fish.  The fish that is the product image\, I made\, but I have included some other pictures for inspiration.   I would request that during this workshop – you will only make a fish. The collaboration and creative process of sharing ideas\, leads to all making a better product.  \nSome of the results from recent raku firings at Old School Clay\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\nOnce your fish is made\, it will be bisque fired. This firing burns out the organic material from the clay\, and makes it sturdy enough to be glazed. Once the piece has been bisqued\, you will be notified. You will then come pick up your piece and hold it until the raku firing you sign up for happens.  \n \nDuring the summer\, I will be doing raku firings. I am hoping to have 8 people per firing to help. You will sign up for a firing  on the Old School Clay website that works with your schedule. The day you sign up\, you will bring your fish and glaze it. Then we will do the firing. There will be no additional charge for the firing. My expectation is that I will do firings on Tuesday Evenings 6 – 8 pm and Saturdays  noon to 2 pm. If it is too hot or rain is expected\, the firing may be cancelled or rescheduled or postponed. \nThese are a couple of good videos about raku – if you are not familiar with the process.  \nTo sign up for this workshop\, click here.\nPlease familiarize yourself with the rules of the studio before committing to this workshop.\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Rhubarb Leaf Birdbath - July
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis has been one of our most popular workshops. However\, come July\, rhubarb leaves may not be available\, so burdock leaves will be used. If both are still around\, you will have a choice between the two. \nWe will take a rhubarb leaf\, or burdock (which has even better veining in the leaf\, imo)\, and press clay onto the leaf creating an impression or fossil of the leaf. It is then draped over a mold\, creating depth\, so it can be used as a bowl or birdbath. Once finished the bowl is microwaveable\, dishwasher safe or ovenproof\,  if protected from thermal shock. It can not be left outside once the weather starts freezing\, as it will likely lead to the bowl cracking. Most of the bowls have been well over a foot in diameter.  \nThe first day of the workshop\, July 11\,  we will create the bowl. The second day\, a week later\, July 18\, you will come back to glaze your bowl. This workshop takes place over 2 days\, July 11 and 18\, from 6-8 pm.  \nPlease review my studio rules before committing to this workshop.  \nTo sign up for this workshop\,  click here.\n

SUMMARY:Saggar Pit Firing Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 4 class – 3 week saggar pit firing workshop.  Pit firing creates earthy looking decorative pottery that suggests it was made centuries ago. No previous experience needed to participate in this class.  \nThe class will be led by visiing artist Keons Sekera who is a student at Mass College of Art majoring in Ceramics.  \nFirst Class: \n\nMake your pot: The studio has 4 wheels \, but plenty of room for handbuilders. Keons and I will lead you through a couple of options for handbuilt pots. The focus will be on making a variation of the Korean moon pot using slabs and molds. You will have 3 pounds of clay from which you can craft your pot.  You will need to make your pot so that it does not need any further furutre refinement – like trimming. It needs to be able to come off the wheel and then into the bisque fire (once dry) .\n\nSecond Class: \n\nBuild the saggar: the saggar is constructed by adding different oxides and carbonates to create color\, as well as organic materials such as coffee\, banana skins\, seaweed\,  ferns and sugar. You can wrap it with copper wire or mesh\, or steel wool…or experiment with it all. \nThe final product is then wrapped in aluminum foil and made ready for the pit fire.\n\nThird Class*: \n\nThe third class will be held offsite in Groton. A pit will have been dug into which a fire needs to be built around the pots. The fire is lit and allowed to burn overnight. This class will start at the scheduled time\, but my take more or less time to get the fire going and insure that it will burn properly.\n\nFourth Class*: \n\nThe next day at the scheduled time\, we will meet back at the burn site to unload the pots from the fire pit and remove the saggar.\nThe pots will need to be cleaned up and we can share results about what materials created what effects. \nYou will be provided a small jar of wax to take home with your pot. The wax needs to be applied to add a luster to the pot and protect the surface from scratches. The pot needs to be dry before the wax can be applied.\n\nIf  rain is forecast\, we may push off the firing to the following weekend.  \nThe classes will take place July 12\, 19\, and the firing July 26 and 27 from 1 – 3 pm.  \nPlease familiarize yourself with studio rules before committing to this class. \nTo sign up for this class\, click here.\n
